[The following is from Malcolm Muggeride’s diary entry for July 22, 1948.]

Went in the evening to see King John at the Open Air Theatre with Eric Newton and his wife. Newton said one ought to listen to Shakespeare at least once every two months just to remind oneself of what can be done with words—rather like going on a binge. Noted many indications in King John of what was to come in Macbeth, almost as though King John was a sort of rough draft for Macbeth.
