[The following is an excerpt from Malcolm Muggeridge’s diary entry for November 21, 1962.]
Almost everything that has been said about America is both true and false. It is enormously monotonous, and infinitely varied. Its pace is fast to the point of exhaustion and slow to the point of exasperation. Americans are kind and generous, and, at the same time, hard and demanding. They tell you everything about themselves in the first half hour of a casual acquaintanceship, and retreat behind a wall of impenetrable reserve.
