According to his friend J. B. Morton, Hilaire Belloc would say to the man who happened to be next to him in a bar, “What do you think will happen to this country? Will there be a sudden collapse or a slow decay?” It was probably the 1930s or 40s and Belloc was referring to Britain. Almost a century has passed and the question seems more pressing today, and not only in reference to Britain but perhaps even more to America.
